Port Elizabeth 2020 Caching Challenge
Proposed Start date 2nd and 3rd week Dec 2020
Who would have thought that in this modern day and age we would be faced with a worldwide pandemic? It’s amazing that with all our medical knowledge, the world has not been able to contain this micro-organism. It has brought the great economies of the world to their knees.
So, let’s get over it, and get out there to do what we really enjoy “GEOCACHING”
The purpose of this challenge is to and revive our crazy hobby and get your imagination and creativity going and to place some quality caches out there, and of course to make it fun for all during the Christmas holidays. Please encourage any other cachers you know to join in the game. The more who take part, the greater the FUN!!!
To participate, you need to hide 3 caches
2 options: -
2 traditional and 1 multi, or 1 night cache
Or
1 Traditional and 1 multi and 1 night cache
Some Cache Basics
Cache Notes, Details and Descriptions
Cache Owners obligations and logging of attempts
Header to be included in Cache Name
(This Cache forms Part of the PEG 2020 game (Port Elizabeth Game 2020). These are caches placed and all published during the second and third weeks of December 2020. the game will run from midnight Sunday day 6 dec 2020 till Sunday 17 January 2021. This cache is available to any geocacher, but we kindly ask that you don’t include any spoiler pics in your log, and no hints or descriptions regarding the cache container, location, or any information that might give an advantage to the game participants. If you are participating in the game, please log DNF’s. This message will be removed after the game ends on Sunday 17th Jan 2021.)
Scoring, Prizes and prizegiving event
Please note the area stretches westward to the St Francis Lighthouse and not at van Staadens as indicated on the map.
Please try to get everyone you know involved – will be great fun. Its very easy to place 3 caches, and there’s plenty space in our area. We have very few “night caches” in our area, and they are very easy to make, and good fun to do also – I am happy to help anyone with cache containers, night caches, etc.
This game will help get some Quality caches out there, and it will also help with attracting out o0f towners to visit PE, and also the number of caches in our area helps add credibility to the planned MEGA.

Or
1 Traditional and 1 multi and 1 night cache
Some Cache Basics
- Only 1 cache can be a T5
- One cache must be a T1
- No restriction on difficulty rating. Sorry no Puzzles (can be a puzzle container)

- No more than 3 stages for the Multi, or night cache
- Stages no more than 2 km apart
- No caches higher than head height (approx. 2 Meters)
- No caches in townships. Safety of competitors not to be compromised.
- Imagine that your daughter is doing the cache
- All the normal rules of caching will apply
- All caches between Colchester in the East, to the St Francis Lighthouse in the West and inland to the Uitenhage municipal boundary
- All cache co-ordinates must be accurate

- Pick your location in the meantime before “publishing for review”.
- Bruce will monitor if there is overlaps, and advise if already taken
- No placing where a ladder or climbing equip is needed
- Caches must be available 24/7.
- No placements where special permission is required, or fees need to be paid
Cache Notes, Details and Descriptions
- All caches names to carry the prefix “PEG 2020” in front of the name.
- E.g. (PEG2020 Marine tower). Makes search filters easier. Can edit the prefix after the game
- You can add “HINTS” if you want to – CO choice. Can add after game closes
- Cache descriptions must have details about the game, so casual cachers don’t share find info. CO’s can delete spoiler pics or descriptions.
- I will put together a standard clause to include just outlining the game.
- Cache descriptions must carry info if “special” equipment is needed, e.g. Laptop, crowbar, Laser pointer, searchlight.
- we assume basic equipment e.g. Screwdriver, Pliers, gloves, tweezers, braai tongs
- Sharing of finds or alliances only diminishes your chances.
- Normal caching rules apply i.e., attributes, any details of interest about the location
Cache Owners obligations and logging of attempts
- CO’s to visit their caches if there is 3 DNF’s in a row to just check cache is not muggled
- Please log all attempts. Including DNF’s (this can highlight that the cache might be missing)
- If any maintenance logs are posted the CO must attend promptly.
- After the game CO’s please take a photo of the logsheet of your caches for verification cross reference purposes.
- I will keep track of finds and update participants on progress (please ensure I have your e-mail address)
- Bruce has undertaken to publish all caches at random intervals during the second and third week of December (something nice to do during the Christmas holidays. Keep your caching Kit next to your bed)
- You can start placing caches now. Bruce will advise if there is an overlap
- Game will run from midnight Sunday day 6 dec 2020 till Sunday 17 January 2021
- All caches to be placed by Sunday 29 Nov 2020 to give Bruce a chance to prepare last few
- Please forward the GC code, and cache name to [email protected] once the cache is published so I can load into the game database. I will forward this database in Excel format to all participants on a weekly basis
